Faculty Administration

This project developed a suite of SQL Server-based programs for maintaining faculty CVs in a relational database.

A standalone version is available for faculty who want to maintain their own CVs. Those versions automatically merge with the program's master database. The program will convert its underlying data to Microsoft Word, so faculty have total control over the presentation of their CVs.

Because this software is a database, rather than a mix of word processing files, faculty information is easily maintained and queried. Many valuable reports are available, such as all department publications sorted by date without duplication. Annual reports are produced directly from the CVs without the traditional cut and pasting from word processing documents, saving both time and money.

This application is accompanied by a contact management system designed for universities, along with an appointment form subsystem for faculty, staff and students. All subsystems are governed by the contact manager. Users may create their own special queries, macros and subsystems.

Also developed is an integrated row-oriented security model (written entirely in triggers) for managing unlimited numbers of groups, each accessing its own subset of data. Departments (or any set of people) may form ad-hoc groups on the fly, specifying what data group members may see.

The Web version provides the functionality of the core software using the Internet. Any Web browser may be used to perform database updates.

Desktop users can simultaneously use the program on either platform.

Related Projects

A related program schedules students within a Problem-Based Learning environment.

Students are automatically assigned to groups within blocks for each school year, minimizing the number of times any two of them meet while balancing group size based on gender and other factors. Different scheduling criteria allow administrators to custom-design their timetables to meet a variety of needs.
